One of my favourite groups brought to life on the big screen and I don’t know why I waited so long to watch Straight Outta Compton. F. Gary Gray did a wonderful job with directing. He did everything to make this movie be one of the year’s best movies. It hit all the notes for me – made me hyped up, made me happy and made me sad – you can call it a roller coaster of emotions. It had it all.
I thought that the casting was the best. Every actor that was casted looked like and acted like the person that they need to perform. Jason Mitchell as Eazy-E, O’Shea Jackson, Jr. as Ice Cube, Corey Hawkins as Dr.Dre, Aldis Hodge as MC Ren, Neil Brown, Jr. as DJ Yella and Paul Giamatti as Jerry Heller were phenomenal. But O’ Shea Jackson, Jr. is Ice Cubes son so………I think he got the best portreyal because he is his father’s son and he looks like him. Paul Giamatti was a great choice to play Jerry Heller and the movie showed the infamous music manager in a new light. Jason Mitchell’s portreyal of Eazy-E was on point, the voice and the attitude – everything was phenomenal. I can say that you will enjoy the whole cast of the film and you will be impressed.
With a soundtrack that is one of the best, the film gives the best energy you will get. From the great tracks that were created by N.W.A. like Straight Outta Compton, Express Yourself, Fuck Tha Police, the tracks from Ice Cube like No Vaseline and few tracks from his album AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted and a lot off tracks from production of Dr.Dre. You will love all of it.
The story was freaking great. I enjoyed the whole ride. From rise of N.W.A. to the fall of the group and death of Eazy-E. It was so entertaining to see how the group came to be and of course it maybe wasn’t all true because nobody tells the truth in the movies, sometimes the truth isn’t so interesting. I would’ve preferred a fully true story over fiction – but that would be a documentary. The most emotional scene for me was when Eazy-E was diagnosed with HIV virus and the things that followed just made me cry – the actors gave the best performances when they received the news about Eazy-E. A heartbreaking scene.
Straight Outta Compton grossed $161.2 million in North America and $40.4 million in other territories for a worldwide total of $201.6 million, against a budget of $28 million.
If you have interest in N.W.A. and their associated musicians, you will love the film. If you love hip hop, you will love this film. If you like a good story, you will love the film. So it is easy to say……..go get the movie and enjoy the ride.
