*Might have small spoilers
With all the trailers, with all the hype from the marketing campaign. We finally saw Suicide Squad and I can say it was awesome. As of August 5 there have been so many polarizing reviews from fans and critics. Fans are saying that the movie is awesome but the critics are trashing the movie. And it is hard to understand if the movie is good or bad. I hope my review will help you. And yeah…..the movie is really good. Everything from the character portrayals, the style of the movie, cinematography and the acting is great.
David Ayer did a great job with Suicide Squad. Like all the other movies in DCEU (Man of Steel, Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice) it has almost the same feel to it, but has more fun to it. Cinematography was beautiful and all the stylized introductions of the characters with flashbacks was so well done. Till the end I loved all the scenes that were made. I hope that sometime soon David Ayer might do another one of DCEU movies.
It is so awesome to see these characters on the big screen – we of course have seen them on TV but that doesn’t count, right? Deadshot, Harley Quinn, El Diablo, Killer Croc, Katana, Rick Flag, Captain Boomerang, Enchantress, Amanda Waller, Slipknot and the Joker were just brilliant in this movie. For me the highlight performances of the movie were from Will Smith, Margot Robbie and Jared Leto.
Let’s start with Will Smith: I think this is the first ensemble movie for him and he really shines in this one. He is not the lead man; he is part of the team. As Deadshot he is great. Seeing the white mask, he wore was awesome. His interaction with his daughter was sweet and you really were backing up this character – even if he’s a bad guy. I can say that I was rooting for every member from the Suicide Squad to succeed. All the character felt like the good guys.
To see finally Harley Quinn in a movie – portrayed by Margot Robbie, with that perfect performance, with those Easter eggs (red and black onesie and the mallet), with everything was such a delight. I was ecstatic when the red and black onesie was shown in a small flashback scene where Harley was dancing with The Joker. I just loved it. Throughout the movie Margot Robbie proved to us that she is Harley Quinn and I can’t wait for the next movie that will feature her.
And the most anticipated performance for all of us was Jared Leto’s performance of The Joker. Seeing the first picture of The Joker I already knew that this will be such a different, more menacing and scary portrayal of The Joker compared to Heath Ledgers Joker in The Dark Knight. With a surprisingly small role in Suicide Squad Jared Leto does his best as The Joker. Every Joker on the big screen has been different from each other and with the scenes what we are given in this movie we can say that this is one of the best Jokers ever (for me at least). I loved that this Joker was more damaged and had a big history (background) with Batman and other characters – even the movie doesn’t show that. He will really remind comic book fans of The New 52 Joker – the look and the characteristics. The chemistry with Jared Leto and Margot Robbie was so good. This movie really made a love story between The Joker and Harley Quinn and it is so sweet. You can see that The Joker truly cares for her. When first introduced (Batman: The Animated Series), these two characters had an abusive relationship. I wanted to see that on the screen but I also liked this version in Suicide Squad.
Not going too deep in all the other actor performances, I can say that they were all awesome. The chemistry worked really well between the actors and they did their best for this movie. Even a funny character named Captain Boomerang was awesome in this movie. I had my doubts about him – but he was awesome. Rick Flagg awesome, Katana awesome, Amanda Waller awesome, Killer Croc awesome, El Diablo awesome, Enchantress awesome. It is hard to say something about Slipknot because he had a small role and didn’t do much. But overall all the actors were awesome. I love it how I describe the performances of the actors. So funny. Everything was awesome!!!!! A+ for me…..ha.
I gave the movie an 8 / 10 because for me there are only two problems in the movie. First being: in the marketing of the movie we were promised that we going to have Jared Leto’s Joker on the screen a lot – for me it felt like that. But we got so little of him. I’m going to be a spoiled kid and say I wanted to have him more on the screen, it’s isn’t fair. In later interviews with Jared Leto it was told that there was so many scenes cut out of the movie with The Joker. And it really felt like there should have been more scenes with him. Even in the trailers you get scenes that aren’t in the movie – that is just sad. Feels like Fantastic Four again – where the movie trailer offered more scenes that weren’t used in the final cut of the movie. I hope that someday we will see all the cut out scenes with The Joker in them.
The second thing that was not that well done was the plot. It is well understood why Amanda Waller made Task Force X but the reason they are in action in this movie is because of Task Force X was made. If the Task Force X would not have been made, everything would have been good and sunny. Also how did Amanda Waller get to Midway City is not explained. Few scenes looked like they were cut too fast and left out some stuff. But at least the plot wasn’t that confusing as the theatrical version of Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice – big win for Suicide Squad.
Overall the movie is really enjoyable and fun to watch. Of course the movie isn’t perfect but with every movie that comes out in the DCEU it is getting better and better. This movie is a must see this summer and you won’t regret it. So put on your Joker T-Shirt, Batman undies and see it.
As of August 11, 2016, Suicide Squad has grossed $179.1 million in North America and $191.5 million in other territories for a worldwide total of $370.6 million, against a budget of $175 million ($325 million including advertising and promotion costs).
*Don’t listen to critics. Always have your own opinion.
*And also try and watch as little as you can from the trailers – it might spoil some fun for you.
