The second movie in Smith’s True North trilogy. The cast that you were introduced with in the movie Tusk is now back with Lily-Rose Depp and Harley Quinn Smith in the leading roles. With Yoga Hosers, Kevin Smith adds another crazy, imaginative work to his filmography. To be honest – this is a really complex film and I think not everyone will get it, but I know I did.
Colleen Collette (Lily-Rose Depp) and Colleen McKenzie (Harley Quinn Smith) are two ordinary Canadian teenage girls living in Winnipeg, that like to spend their free time doing yoga with their guru, Yogi Bayer (Justin Long). One day these Sophomore girls are invited to a Senior party by Hunter Calloway (Austin Butler). When they do arrive at the party, they uncover an ancient evil, long buried beneath Eh-2-Zed where they work as clerks.
As I’m pretty familiar with all the crazy ideas that could come from Kevin Smith (taking the movie Tusk as an example), I just knew we will get something bizarre once again. It’s kind of sad that this movie is not receiving good reviews from critics around the world, but with the previously mentioned ‘Kevin Smith crazy idea factor’ it’s quite expected. Yoga Hosers mostly feels like a movie for people that are hardcore fans of Kevin Smith and enjoy listening to his SModcasts, especially Hollywood Babble-On. It’s great to see that a director like Kevin Smith just does not give a damn about the critics and just keeps on producing movies that are clearly for his fans that are quite familiar with his humour.
With myself being a big fan of Hollywood Babble-On, it was just so much fun listening to the dialogues in the movie. They were hilarious. As you might have guessed it – the movie features a lot of talking, just like all Kevin Smith movies. I think that the long and interesting dialogues are the ‘icing on the cake’ when it comes to his movies. The movie actually reminded me of Clerks. Paying small tribute to the classic, the movie features the famous line “I’m not even supposed to be here today!” which was hilarious. As you can see by the trailer, the movie looks nothing like the first entry in True North trilogy. Tusk was not that scary of a horror movie and it used the dark tones to set the mood right. On the other hand, Yoga Hosers has a very different tone, much lighter. The tone seems to be set in a way that a teenage girl would like it and maybe, just maybe, a 24-year-old guy too. Yup, that’s me!
As like all recent movies from ‘Silent Bob’, Yoga Hosers features a greatly talented cast. Lily-Rose Depp and Harley Quinn Smith stole the show of the whole movie. The chemistry between these two up and coming actresses were great to watch and I hope that Smith will recognize their talent, thus including them in the third movie of True North trilogy – Moose Jaws. Also, Johnny Depp returns from Tusk as Guy LaPointe, who is still the “legendary” man-hunter. For me Guy LaPointe is the most hilarious character that Johnny Depp has done and it is worth mentioning that he is almost unrecognizable in this role. A big treat for fans came from the performance of Ralph Garman, who did his impressions of famous people that you can also hear on Hollywood Babble-On. Almost the whole movie felt like a big episode of Hollywood Babble-On and other SModcasts shows. You are constantly reminded that you are watching a Kevin Smith movie. We are also gifted with a lot of his friends’ cameos that were great additions to the movie. Stan Lee, Jason Mewes, Kevin Conroy and a lot more that made Yoga Hosers more exciting. It mostly looked like a big family reunion. Just like in Tusk, I enjoyed the whole cast involved in the movie.
A great family reunion but some not so great things were done that made the movie for me a little bit frustrating to watch. I just couldn’t get my head around the crazy idea of Bratzis. Just where do you get an idea for Nazi sausages that kill you going through your ass? At first they were funny, but later on in the movie there were just too many of Bratzis and it started to get annoying, especially when for the 100th time I heard them say “Wunderbar”. Also including Satanists in the storyline felt like way too much. It got overstuffed with unnecessary features. Sometimes the plot just didn’t make sense. Don’t get me started on the “special” effects of Bratzis, which felt underwhelming and really out of place.
To conclude, Yoga Hosers is something different and even more disturbing and crazy than what we are used to see from Kevin Smith’s imagination. If you are a SModcast listener and a HARDCORE fan of Kevin Smith, you will truly have fun watching this movie. Otherwise – if you haven’t heard anything from a director named Kevin Smith aka Silent Bob, I would suggest you checking out some of his previous pieces of work before you hop into this movie. For a true fan, this movie will be a blast.
